Courage, Resistance & the Trauma of Creating

Courage, Resistance & the Trauma of Creating

Planting the Rose

  • Ground into your creative dream: What project is calling you now?

  • Reflect on the “garden of your life”—where have you been pouring energy outward?

  • Gentle journaling/visioning exercises to name your project, even in its simplest form.

  • Introduce the Baby Steps method: what’s the tiniest move you can make this week?

Courage, Resistance & the Trauma of Creating

Courage, Resistance & the Trauma of Creating

Courage, Resistance & the Trauma of Creating

Creating is one of the bravest acts we ever do.
Whether you’re writing a memoir, painting, recording a cooking show, or launching an online class—when you share your original work, it feels vulnerable. You’re not just presenting an idea; you’re revealing your heart. Any criticism, even a stray comment, can feel like a wound to the deepest part of you.

This is normal. Creativity is exposing. It takes courage to show what matters most to you. And starting later in life can add another layer of anxiety in a world that often devalues age. Yet—your wisdom, your lived experience, and your scars are not liabilities. They are your giftsWhy sharing feels “naked.” The psychology of creative exposure.

  • 10 common fears that block creativity. (Fear of rejection, perfectionism, “too old,” fear of success, fear of failure, etc.)

  • Private vs. Public Creativity. Honoring when your work is for you alone—and when it’s for the community.

  • The Hero’s Journey. Understanding that presenting your work is part of the mythic path: returning home with a gift to share.

  • The true final act. As mythologist Michael Meade reminds us, transformation is completed when your community receives your gift and you allow yourself to be nourished by their applause.

20 Habits to Support “Becoming the Creator”

  1. Creative Morning Sip – pair your morning tea/coffee with 5 minutes of sketching, journaling, or voice notes.

  2. Daily Rosebud – commit to one tiny act of creativity each day, no matter how small (a sentence, a doodle, a color choice).

  3. Set a Sacred Spot – claim a table, chair, or even a tray as your creative space, no matter how small.

  4. 7-Minute Timer – create in short bursts; low pressure but surprisingly effective.

  5. Before Bed Note – jot down one idea or reflection at night; seeds grow while you sleep.

  6. “Just Open It” Rule – open the notebook, the document, or the paint box—don’t require more. Momentum often follows.

  7. Creative Playlist – play the same music each time to train your brain: this is my creating time.

  8. Stack with Routine – tie creativity to an existing habit: after walking the dog, before dinner, after brushing teeth.

  9. Baby Step Menu – make a list of 10 micro-tasks you can pick from when you have low energy.

  10. Visual Anchor – post your project’s title, an image, or a word where you see it daily.

  11. Weekly Bouquet – review your small wins at the end of the week, like gathering blossoms into a vase.

  12. Accountability Buddy – check in with a friend or group once a week with your baby-step progress.

  13. Creative Journal – keep one notebook just for your project ideas, notes, and reflections.

  14. Permission to Pause – allow yourself to rest; consistency doesn’t mean daily perfection.

  15. Morning Question – “What’s one tiny creative act I can do today?”

  16. Ritual Object – light a candle, put on a scarf, or hold a stone to signal: I’m entering creative time.

  17. Limitless List – jot every idea, no matter how wild—train yourself to value the flow, not judge it.

  18. Celebrate Starts – praise yourself for beginning, even if you don’t finish. Starting is the habit.

  19. Creative Walking – take a walk and let ideas surface; record them in a voice memo.

  20. Claim the Identity – daily affirmation: “I am a Creator. My small steps matter.”
